Artsakh is a republic founded in response to attempted ethnic cleansing in the region. We are raising awareness of the violence these people are facing.
Artsakh is the local name for the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic (NKR).
In the 1980′s, the Azeri government ethnically cleansed the Armenian population out of the region of Nakhichevan. Many fled to the city of Rostov in Russia.
Around 1988, the Azeri government started to carry out a similar pogrom in the region known as Nagorno-Karabakh, (NKR) or Artsakh. The people were forced to fight for their lives without a standing army or any advanced weaponry.
The result was a roughly 6 year war in Artsakh, which was devastating for Armenians and Azeris alike. At the end of the war, Artsakh gained control over their homeland.
Today, Artsakh functions as an independent state, but is not recognized by any other countries. You can still see the effects of the war, especially in the city of Shushi, where there are many ruined buildings like the girls’ school shown below.
There is A LOT of misinformation about this topic. You will see many maps saying that the NKR does not exist, or that it is not contiguous with Armenia, and having driven across the Armenia-Artsakh border, I can tell you that that is not the case. Many news sources misrepresent the conflict, and omit information to favor the Azeri side.
